Why Seeing Your GP Face-to-Face

Why Seeing Your GP Face-to-Face

Still Matters

3rd Jun 2025

In the age of virtual consultations and instant messaging, it's easy to forget the importance of sitting down with your GP in person.

These days, it’s easier than ever to book a quick phone appointment with a GP. And while telehealth has made healthcare more accessible in many ways, there are still times when nothing beats seeing your doctor in person.

Some Things Can’t Be Done Over a Screen

When you visit your GP face-to-face, they’re able to do a full physical assessment—checking your blood pressure, listening to your heart and lungs, looking at your skin, or examining a sore joint. These things simply can’t be done over the phone. In-person appointments give your doctor the chance to notice things that may not come up in conversation but are important to your health.

More Personal, More Reassuring

Talking to your doctor in person often feels more natural and comfortable. You can have a more open, relaxed conversation, ask questions freely, and feel reassured knowing you're being fully seen and heard. That personal connection can make a big difference, especially when dealing with complex or sensitive health concerns.

It’s About Your Whole Health

A face-to-face visit also makes it easier to take care of multiple things at once, whether that’s updating your immunisations, checking in on a chronic condition, or asking about something that’s been bothering you. Your GP can also quickly refer you to other on-site services if needed, like a nurse, pathology, or allied health team. When Should You See Your GP in Person?

While telehealth works well for things like follow-up appointments, prescription reviews, or discussing test results, in-person care is usually best when:

  • You have new or ongoing symptoms
  • You’re due for a check-up or health assessment
  • You’re feeling physically unwell
  • You want a more thorough review of your health
