Influenza A Is Still Lurking: Here’s How to Protect Yourself
Just when we start to settle into the warmer months, Influenza A has a way of sticking around longer than expected. Across Australia, GPs are still seeing cases pop up — a reminder that flu season doesn’t follow the calendar as neatly as we’d like.
While many people assume the risk drops off after winter, the reality is that Influenza A can circulate well into late spring and summer. Travel, end-of-year gatherings and busy social calendars all increase the chance of viruses spreading.
So what do you need to know?
Why Influenza A Is Still Circulating
1. Increased travel and gatherings
Holidays, school events, work parties and family catch-ups mean more close contact. Viruses thrive in crowded spaces.
2. Waning immunity
If you were vaccinated earlier in the year, your protection may begin to fade over time. That makes it easier for late-season flu to break through.
3. A stronger-than-usual flu year
Australia has experienced higher flu activity in 2025, which means the tail end of the season can last longer than usual.
Common Symptoms to Look Out For
Even late in the year, if you’re feeling unwell, it’s worth considering the flu — not just a “summer cold”. Watch out for:
- Sudden fever
- Chills or sweats
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Cough or shortness of breath
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue and weakness
If you're unsure, a GP can help assess your symptoms and test for Influenza and other viruses.
When to See a GP
If you’re feeling unwell and symptoms are worsening, persistent, or affecting your breathing or hydration, it’s important to speak with a GP. This is especially important for:
- Children under 5 years
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Pregnant women
- People with chronic health conditions
How to Protect Yourself and Your Family
Even though we’re past the peak of flu season, simple steps still make a big difference:
- Stay home when sick
- Wash hands regularly
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Avoid close contact with vulnerable people when unwell
- Keep up to date with recommended vaccines
If you haven’t had your flu shot this year, it’s not too late. Protection lasts the entire season — and this year, that season is still going. Flu vaccines are available at all Our Medical centres.
